Areas of Practice: Co-counsel and spokesman for several victims' families in the 2007 Crandall Canyon Mine Disaster in Huntington, Utah. Assisted the Crandall victim's families secure a settlement with multiple Defendants. Co-Counsel in a wrongful death action that netted a settlement in excess of $750,000. Personal injury settlement over $100,000 for injuries sustained to a passenger in an automobile accident. Lead Counsel in a wrongful death action with anticipated settlement in excess of $2,500,000. Probate Judgment in excess of $110,000 in dispute regarding property distribution involving an elective share. $210,000 arbitration award in a breach of contract action. Lead Counsel in a $500,000 claim in the Court of Federal Claims for damages sustained in a project involving the Federal Government and a Utah Contractor. Sonny is a graduate of the top rated University of Iowa Law School, where he was privileged to serve as a research assistant for the esteemed President Willard "Sandy" Boyd, President Emeritus of the University of Iowa. Prior to attending the University of Iowa, Sonny attended the University Of Utah David Eccles School Of Business, as a graduate student, before being recruited away to assist in the technology planning and fulfillment of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games. Sonny was privileged to be a member of the first 500 organizers of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games and he has worked as a consultant and employee for Excite Inc., excite.com, Excite@home, ADP Inc., and KPMG Consulting.
Sonny enjoys complex litigation, which includes criminal and civil trial work, commercial and securities litigation, arbitration, personal injury litigation, and Sonny advises and consults with individuals and businesses across the State of Utah concerning their business strategies, and tax and estate planning. With seven jury trials under his belt and more than twice that in bench trials, it is no surprise that Sonny was recently named as 1 of only 36 “Litigation Stars” in the State of Utah.
Sonny sits on multiple boards across the State of Utah and is actively involved in his community politically, and advocating for community minded activities to better foster community support and community awareness.
Sonny and his wife Bandi have four lovely children and are ardent advocates of adoption. The Olsen family enjoys riding motorcycles and ATVs as well as fishing, camping, and enjoying the outdoors.
